Tier I therapist

I believe that each individual has unlimited potential and strength to deal with various difficulties. However, sometimes these potentials and strengths are like seeds buried in a vast dark space. Regardless of how long it takes to see them, they are always there. We need a little light to guide us to find them and provide water, soil, and nutrients for them to grow.

As an international student, I have faced numerous adjustment issues and family/interpersonal challenges. The support from others has been like guiding lights that brighten my dark space, helping me better understand myself and my strengths, which have navigated me through those challenges. I believe that counseling is also a light that can help us explore that dark space.

I aspire to create a safe, genuine, and inclusive space for my clients, where they can freely express all their thoughts and feelings. You will take the lead in exploring the places you want to go, and I will walk alongside you as your partner on this journey, being the light to illuminate the path beneath your feet.

The support from others has been like guiding lights that brighten my dark space, helping me better understand myself and my strengths, which have navigated me through those challenges.

My Story

Throughout my junior and senior high school years, I observed that many of my closest friends and acquaintances faced challenges in their lives. However, not everyone had access to someone who was willing to listen, support, understand, or provide a safe space for them to share their stories. Witnessing this gap in support systems sparked my interest in psychology. To delve deeper into the developmental processes of individuals from birth to old age, I chose to study developmental psychology in college.

During my college years, I volunteered as a teacher's assistant at a local middle school's After-School Program. Most of the children at this school came from minority groups, and the school itself lacks funding. These students show a higher level of maturity and more awareness of societal issues. Many of them had experienced trauma, had complex family relationships, or experienced several Adverse Childhood Experiences(ACEs), yet they still displayed remarkable resilience and repair from their past experience. By approaching them friendly, supportive, and empathetically, I found that they were willing to open up and share their stories, even those accompanied by painful memories.

This experience deeply impressed upon me the unlimited potential of every individual, as well as the power of listening and support. At the same time, I realized the impact of society and the environment on individuals. Aspects such as one's beliefs, identity, and values are closely related to their environment. As an international student, I also gained a deeper understanding of how personal experiences, social, and cultural backgrounds influence me. All of this solidified my belief in becoming a mental health counselor. I aspire to be someone who provides a safe and genuine space that helps individuals understand themselves and discover their latent potential. Additionally, I will pay more attention to the connections between macro-systems such as societal and cultural influences and individuals' thoughts and behaviors.

Therapeutic Approaches

Each person's experiences, upbringing, identities, intersections between identities, and social/cultural backgrounds shape their unique individuality. While many experiences may be similar, the integration of these factors eventually leads to different thoughts and behaviors in individuals. Therefore, I am adopting a person-centered approach, aiming to create a therapy experience that is non-judgmental, inclusive, and empathetic to my clients.

At the same time, my therapeutic approach also integrates elements of relational therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic therapy. In our lives, we often encounter various difficulties: anxiety about the future, academic pressure, others' opinions, and feelings of helplessness. These issues may cause us to lose direction and fall into a dark space where everything becomes unknown, and negative emotions are magnified. Different therapy approaches can be used to explore this space, acting like different types of light to help us understand and cope with that darkness and uncertainty. CBT can guide us to recognize the connections between emotions, thoughts, and behavior, developing new thought patterns and cognitive frameworks to re-understand that dark space. Psychodynamic and relational therapies can help us explore early experiences, understand interpersonal relationships, and how these experiences and connections impact our current selves.

During university, I created simple cartoons and spent my free time drawing. When I could express myself in various ways without restrictions, I could see different sides of myself. In therapy, we can also utilize creativity, such as using arts, to express our emotions and discover our potential strengths.

Together, we can find the light that makes you feel most comfortable and use the most suitable techniques and theoretical approaches to guide you through that dark space.

Specialties

I would love to work with clients from any background. My specialties include adjustment issues, self-confidence issues, interpersonal relationship issues, anxiety, and depression. In many cases, these issues can bring about feelings of unease, fear, or other negative emotions. Sometimes, these emotions can motivate us to move forward, but other times, they cause us to lose direction and go into a pitch-dark space. I hope to bring you a beam of light, explore your strengths and potential with you, and walk out of that darkness together.
