I offer counseling services in Mandarin, English, Korean, and Fuzhounese.

My diverse cultural experiences and background in the LGBTQIA+ community equip me to guide clients through healing by exploring their personal and cultural narratives in an empathetic space.

My Story

Having grown up in Fujian, China and lived and studied in South Korea and the United States, I've encountered a broad spectrum of cultural landscapes, significantly enhancing my empathy and understanding in my therapeutic practice. This holistic perspective is also shaped by personal and familial narratives: my mother, a gynecologist, nurtured my sensitivity to women's issues, and my grandfather, a Korean War veteran, exposed me to the complexities of intergenerational trauma from a young age. Furthermore, my academic studies in photography and psychology instilled in me a respect for seeing the world through a variety of lenses, allowing me to sensitively and objectively understand my clients' issues within a broader cultural and historical context, rather than simply attributing them to individual shortcomings. The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the loss of my grandfather and experiencing displacement, honed my personal and professional ability to navigate grief and loss.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have an intimate knowledge of identity development and acceptance. Working in galleries and assisting artists in Seoul, as well as serving vulnerable groups in New York addiction treatment clinics, has given me a profound awareness of the therapeutic potential of art. All these skills and experiences have prepared me to provide clients with a unique therapeutic pathway that involves the exploration and expression of complex emotions and experiences through art. In therapy, I create a safe space for clients to explore their personal and cultural narratives, encouraging self-discovery and healing through a process that respects and integrates their diverse histories and perspectives.

Therapeutic Approaches

In my practice, I integrate several therapeutic modalities to create a person-centered, relational approach that addresses both the emotional and cognitive needs of my clients. I draw from art therapy to provide a non-verbal outlet for expression, particularly for those who struggle to articulate their feelings. Narrative therapy helps clients reframe their stories and find meaning in their experiences, while mindfulness-based techniques assist in grounding and reducing anxiety. Additionally, my therapeutic style emphasizes a sensory-focused approach, prioritizing awareness of the body's signals as a path to deeper self-understanding and healing. By combining these methods, I tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of each individual, ensuring that our work together is both collaborative and deeply personal. The strong therapeutic alliance we build is central to client advancement, providing a safe and supportive space where healing and growth can occur.

Specialties

I specialize in working with a diverse range of populations, particularly focusing on LGBTQ+ individuals, those dealing with attachment issues, intergenerational trauma, substance use concerns, body image anxiety, Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP), cross-cultural adjustment, and art therapy. My extensive experience in these areas allows me to offer specialized support that is both empathetic and effective.

Art Therapy
Art therapy is a dynamic and accessible process where everyone can express themselves creatively—no artistic skills required. I believe that every person has an innate ability to create. In our sessions, we might explore various mediums, like clay or sand tray work, to unlock this potential. I use the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC) as a guiding framework in art therapy. The ETC helps us understand how different levels of creative activity correspond to different ways of processing experiences. It starts with the kinesthetic level, where simple actions like drawing lines or making marks on paper engage basic sensory and motor functions. As we progress, these shapes can evolve, tapping into perceptual skills as we start to recognize forms and structures. Further exploration may lead to symbolic thinking, where these forms take on personal meaning and connect to the client's life story. Finally, we reach the cognitive level, where we analyze and integrate these symbols, fostering deeper self-awareness and emotional insight. This method allows clients to access and express emotions that may be difficult to verbalize, develop problem-solving skills, and gain a new perspective on challenges, ultimately empowering them to approach life with greater clarity and confidence.

Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP)
From a young age, I was highly sensitive to sounds, lights, and smells, often being labeled as "strange" because of this. However, through my studies in psychology, I discovered the concept of Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP). HSP can manifest in sensory sensitivity and emotional sensitivity, and I realized that this sensitivity is not a flaw, but a unique strength. This understanding has profoundly influenced my therapeutic approach, allowing me to detect subtle issues and empathize with others on a deeper level. Art therapy is particularly effective in this context, as it facilitates sensory regulation and provides a non-verbal means of processing and expressing emotions. My heightened sensitivity to emotional nuances enables me to form stronger connections with my clients and enhance the effectiveness of the therapeutic process.

LGBTQIA+  Community
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals in this group. I provide a safe and affirming space where clients can explore their identities, navigate the complexities of coming out, and address issues related to discrimination and internalized stigma. My approach is grounded in empathy and cultural sensitivity, ensuring that clients feel understood and supported throughout their therapeutic journey.

Attachment and Intimate Relationships
Attachment issues can deeply influence relationships and emotional well-being. I work with clients to uncover the root of these issues, often stemming from early childhood experiences, and help them develop healthier attachment patterns. By integrating attachment theory with art therapy and narrative techniques, I assist clients in rebuilding their sense of security and fostering more fulfilling relationships.

Intergenerational Trauma and Family Issues
Intergenerational trauma often manifests as unresolved emotional pain passed down through families. My work in this area focuses on helping clients identify and break these cycles of trauma, using art therapy to access and process deep-seated emotions. I provide a space where clients can explore their family histories, understand the impact of past traumas, and work towards healing and breaking the cycle for future generations.

Addiction/Substance Use
Substance use concerns are complex and often intertwined with other mental health issues. I have extensive experience working in addiction treatment, where I integrate art therapy with other evidence-based approaches, including the self-regulation model, to support clients in their recovery journey. My focus is on helping clients understand the underlying causes of their substance use, develop healthier coping strategies, and build a sustainable path to recovery.

Body Positivity
Body image anxiety is a prevalent issue, particularly in a society that places immense pressure on physical appearance. Having lived and worked in East Asia, especially in South Korea, I have a deeper understanding of these pressures and how they impact individuals in many aspects of their lives. I help clients navigate the complexities of body image concerns, working to challenge societal standards and foster a more positive self-image. Through art therapy, particularly through the use of self-portraits, I support clients in exploring their relationship with their bodies and developing a healthier, more compassionate self-view.

More About Me

I have an adorable dog named Pao Pao, and since he came into my life, everything feels a bit brighter. When I’m not working, I love photography, writing, and taking care of my plants. One of my favorite things to do is grab a picnic basket, take Pao Pao to the park, and just enjoy the day. These little hobbies help me stay connected to nature and bring me a lot of peace. They’re also my way of practicing self-care. What about you? I look forward to hearing your story.
